Chile's Ministry of Education launches early reading strategy

Three out of five Chilean children reach second grade without solid reading comprehension, a situation that predicts an 88% chance of persistent difficulties. The Ministry of Education has responded with the "Chile Aprende y Avanza" strategy, placing early childhood at the centre of its effort and linking schools, families and social organisations.

Fundación ALMA, led by executive director Carmen de la Maza, stresses that shared reading and emotional wellbeing are essential to closing the gap. The initiative aims to strengthen adult support for children before they enter school and throughout their education, hoping to improve long‑term outcomes and prevent chronic learning deficits.
