Coquimbo Hosts Chile's National Municipal Council Congress 2026

More than 800 municipal councilors from across Chile inaugurated the National Congress of Councillors (ACHM 2026) in Coquimbo on June 16. Organized by the Chilean Association of Municipalities, the three‑day meeting runs through June 19 and focuses on probity, transparency, municipal security, fiscal oversight and local legislative challenges. organizers highlighted the event’s role in fostering dialogue among urban, rural, island and isolated communes.

During the opening session a video greeting from President José Antonio Kast was projected, prompting a sharp dispute. Councilor Eduardo Flores of Pichidegua argued, “Respect the President, but it is not the moment for a greeting; the country is suffering from budget cuts in health and education.” Councilwoman Paulina Zúñiga of Concón countered, emphasizing the need to respect elected authorities regardless of political differences. The incident underscored tensions between national leadership and local officials.

ACHM president and Zapallar mayor Gustavo Alessandri praised the gathering as a valuable space for municipal dialogue, while Coquimbo mayor Alí Manouchehri lauded the city’s role as the venue. Councilor Cristóbal Escobar noted the territorial diversity of participants, expressing confidence that the congress will strengthen municipal governance nationwide.
