Chile's President Kast unveils new security plan amid cabinet reshuffle

President José Antonio Kast said his government has already achieved concrete results in public security and will formally present a new national security plan at the public accounts ceremony on 1 June, with an initial briefing on 25 May. The plan, to be detailed by newly appointed Minister of Security Martín Arrau, is built on seven pillars that include combating organized crime, territorial recovery, comprehensive crime prevention, police strengthening, criminal analysis, coordination with municipalities and private security.

Deputy Interior Minister Claudio Alvarado defended the recent cabinet changes, explaining they are meant to give “more energy” to security policy. He highlighted joint police operations, drug seizures in the north and anti‑smuggling actions in Temucuicui, and stressed the need for better communication of the plan’s three axes: territorial control, intensified pursuit of organized crime, and institutional strengthening. Arrau is scheduled to present the full parameters of the plan in a Senate plenary on 2 June.
