Chile's school cellphone ban improves focus and cohesion, early assessment shows

Four months after the enactment of Law 21.801, which restricts mobile phone use in Chilean schools, the Universidad Católica de Valparaíso conducted an initial assessment. Teachers reported that students are more attentive in class and engage more in outdoor play during breaks. The ban has also been linked to a decrease in conflicts and cyberbullying.

Educators noted that compliance requires storing phones in designated lockers at the start of the day, and while most students and parents have not opposed the measure, some older pupils still seek ways to use their devices, often citing music. Officials say further data are needed to measure long‑term learning outcomes, but the early signs suggest the policy is meeting its short‑term goals of improving concentration and school cohesion.
