Chile's Security Minister Martín Arrau reshuffles ministry and targets rural crime

Chile's security minister Martín Arrau asked the resignations of subsecretaries Andrés Jouannet (Public Security) and Ana Victoria Quintana (Prevention of Crime) as part of a restructuring of the newly created Ministry of Public Security. The move comes weeks after Arrau took office and follows his review of the government's security strategy, with plans to present a new national security strategy and a legislative package to strengthen police work and combat organized crime.

In a Senate special session chaired by Senator Miguel Becker, Arrau outlined several initiatives aimed at improving security in the country, especially in the La Araucanía region. The proposals include a draft Flagrant Law, tougher penalties for members of criminal groups, a rural crime program to speed response times and combat drug micro‑trafficking, and the creation of a task force for the southern macro‑zone. The session also featured comments from presidential delegate Francisco Ljubetic, who praised the minister's plans.
