The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) announced a biological closure of the merluza austral (southern hake) that will run from 1 August to 31 August. The ban covers the fishing zones from Los Lagos to Magallanes and prohibits extraction, commercialization, processing, storage and transport of the species nationwide. Director Soledad Tapia travelled to Puerto Montt with fishermen leader Juan García to promote the campaign "Para que no se agote, tiene que pasar agosto" and warned that the agency will monitor the entire value chain, with violations punishable by imprisonment.

A joint inspection by Sernapesca and Carabineros in Pargua seized 2.86 tonnes of unauthorised marine resources – 2,797 kg of merluza austral, 21 kg of golden conger and 42 kg of jurel – and detained the driver. Regional Sernapesca director Cristian Hudson said the operation shows strengthened controls to ensure compliance and protect the sector that supports thousands of artisanal fishing families.
