Chile's Valle del Elqui tourism rebounds after historic storm

A historic frontal system swept the Coquimbo Region, delivering record rainfall, flash floods, landslides and mountain snow that caused minor road damage across the Valle del Elqui. Towns such as Vicuña, Diaguitas, Pisco Elqui and others reported limited damage but saw rapid restoration of connectivity after crews cleared the CH‑41 corridor and opened detour routes.

Local authorities and the municipal tourism corporation say most hotels, restaurants, astrotourism sites and artisan providers are now fully operational. Vicente Sarria Pino, manager of the Vicuña Tourism Corporation, stated, "Hoy podemos informar que la gran mayoría ya se encuentran operativos y preparados para recibir a quienes deseen visitarnos." Visitors are urged to confirm reservations, check official transit updates and respect road detours to ensure safe, responsible tourism.

The recovery aims to revive the valley’s economy, which had suffered from reduced visitor numbers during the storm, while emphasizing safety and environmental stewardship.
