Chile's Valparaíso Region launches government initiatives to strengthen community ties and aid the homeless

On June 11, the Division of Social Organizations (DOS) led by director Katerine Montealegre visited Chile's Valparaíso Region to headline a dialogue on the National Reconstruction plan. The visit included a service fair and meetings with local officials, such as Cartagena mayor Lily Silva, highlighting goals to create formal jobs, rebuild areas damaged by fires and modernise state services. Montealegre said the DOS has already reached more than 22,000 people through trainings and mobile fairs.

In the same region, the Provincial Delegation of Marga Marga, chaired by Presidential Provincial Delegate Gonzalo Azancot Rebolledo, convened an inter‑sectoral “Mesa para la Superación de la Situación de Calle.” Representatives from the regional social development ministry, health services, police, the local archdiocese and several municipalities joined to coordinate prevention and reintegration actions for people experiencing homelessness.

Both efforts aim to improve citizen participation, strengthen ties between the state and community organisations, and address social challenges in Valparaíso.
