Chilliwack Fire Department Opens New Live‑Fire Training Facility
A four‑storey live‑fire training centre built from shipping containers opened on Wolfe Road in Chilliwack, British Columbia, on July 27, 2026. The facility can be heated to about 500 °F, filled with a pea‑soup smoke substitute and re‑configured to mimic multi‑level apartments, a lobby and even a heavy steel door similar to a bank vault.
Construction was funded in part by $1.22 million from the federal government’s Build Communities Strong Fund. Mayor Popove said the new centre “supports the growing need for more technical training opportunities” for the department’s crews. Lieutenant Cory Schaeffer led tours at the opening, demonstrating the building’s adaptable layout. The centre is intended to boost firefighter safety, competency and operational readiness, and recruitment for paid‑on‑call firefighters remains open until August 7, 2026.
