Chiloé prosecutor to formalize charges for illegal red-tailed hawk hunting

Chilean prosecutors are set to formalize charges against Olegario del Carmen Pérez for the illegal hunting of a red-tailed hawk (Buteo ventralis) in the Dalcahue commune on Chiloé Island. The species is classified as vulnerable and is a protected bird under national environmental regulations.

The case follows a citizen complaint involving photographic evidence of a subject posing with the bird's carcass as a trophy while carrying a firearm. Following an investigation, the Public Ministry identified the individual and requested a hearing for charges including illegal hunting of a protected species and aggravated animal cruelty resulting in death. The formalization hearing is scheduled for September 3 at the Castro Guarantee Court.
