Chimalhuacán adds 12 winning stone sculptures to municipal heritage

The stone carving competition at the 2026 Chimalhuacán Metropolitan Fair (FEMECHI) has concluded, resulting in 12 winning sculptures that will be integrated into the municipal heritage. The contest featured four distinct categories: Contemporary Art, Modern Art, Pre-Hispanic Art, and Sacred Art.

Winners in each category received cash prizes, with 70,000 pesos awarded for first place, 50,000 pesos for second, and 30,000 pesos for third. Notable winning works include ‘Eclipse’ by Miguel Ángel Jiménez Arrieta, ‘La noria’ by Enrique Arrieta Arrieta, ‘Fusión’ by José Hernández Hernández, and ‘El eco de la cantera y el carnaval de la eternidad’ by Joel Méndez Ugarte.

Mayor Xóchitl Flores Jiménez and municipal culture officials emphasized that the event serves to preserve the local identity and the traditional craft of master stonemasons. The sculptures were crafted using cantera stone from Aguascalientes and green jade cantera from Oaxaca. The works were evaluated by specialists from institutions including UNAM and the National Institute of Fine Arts.
