Chimbote and Nuevo Chimbote face flood risks and new security measures

A diagnostic study by the Colegio de Arquitectos del Perú Regional Áncash and the Colegio de Ingenieros de Chimbote warns of significant urban vulnerabilities in Chimbote and Nuevo Chimbote. The report highlights persistent issues with urban drainage, infrastructure maintenance, and a gap between flood prevention planning and actual execution. Experts warn that for the 2026-2027 summer, the region faces risks from intense rainfall, river overflows, coastal erosion, and anomalous waves, which could disrupt basic services and impact fishing and port activities.

In response to local security and emergency needs, Nuevo Chimbote has inaugurated a new Interconnected Citizen Security Center. The facility is equipped with over one hundred intelligent cameras featuring facial recognition and license plate identification, as well as six drones with night vision capabilities. The center aims to improve crime prevention and emergency response through enhanced coordination between municipal security (serenazgo) and the National Police of Peru. The project includes new patrol units, including ten trucks and twelve motorcycles, and several decentralized immediate attention bases.
