Moraleja arson defendant seeks acquittal in Cáceres court

The defense for a man accused of causing a fire in Moraleja (Cáceres) in May 2024 has argued for his acquittal, claiming there is insufficient evidence to prove his guilt. During a hearing at the Provincial Court of Cáceres, defense attorney Andrés Sánchez maintained his client's innocence, challenging the prosecution's ability to overcome the presumption of innocence.

Because no settlement was reached during the hearing, the case will proceed to trial. The prosecution, represented by Amparo Chávarri, is seeking a 13-year prison sentence for the crime of arson with danger to life or physical integrity.

The incident occurred on the night of May 16, 2024. According to the prosecution, the accused purchased gasoline and subsequently set fire to a vehicle, which caused the flames to spread to other cars, homes, and the electrical grid. The fire forced the evacuation of local residents and required the rescue of an elderly couple from an affected home. Total civil liability for damages is estimated at 41,075 euros.
