China accelerates robotics and AI through $20bn innovation plan

China is undergoing a significant shift toward automation and robotics as part of a $20 billion plan to lead in global innovation and compete with the United States. The country currently operates more than two million robots in its factories, the highest number globally, and produces over half of the world's industrial robots.

To support this transition, China is investing in specialized vocational education, such as the Hangzhou Technician Institute, to train a new generation of engineers in artificial intelligence, coding, and robotic development. This push for a tech-savvy workforce aims to sustain the country's economic transformation through advanced manufacturing and high-tech industrial applications.
