China accelerates runway construction on Antelope Reef
China is accelerating construction of a full-sized runway on Antelope Reef within the contested Paracel Islands. Satellite imagery from late September shows land reclamation activities, including the use of gravel, concrete, and heavy machinery to level the surface.
Analysts suggest that if current progress continues, the runway could be completed and capable of supporting aircraft landings by mid-2027. While Chinese state media maintains that the development serves civilian purposes such as meteorological and scientific research, security experts indicate the site could become a significant offshore military base. Such a facility would expand China's operational reach and surveillance capabilities in the South China Sea, potentially impacting maritime routes near Hainan Island.
The Paracel Islands are claimed by China, Vietnam, and Taiwan. China has maintained control of the archipelago since 1974. The expansion at Antelope Reef follows previous large-scale land reclamation projects in the Spratly Islands, which resulted in the creation of artificial islands equipped with military infrastructure.
