China accelerates Type 054B frigate production

China is accelerating the production of its Type 054B frigates, the most advanced escort class in the People's Liberation Army Navy. Recent satellite imagery and shipyard observations indicate that the program has transitioned from the prototype phase into serial production, with construction occurring simultaneously at the Huangpu Wenchong shipyard in Guangzhou and the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai.

Technical advancements in the newer units suggest an increase in firepower. While earlier models featured fewer missile modules, newer vessels appear to be equipped with up to six vertical launch system modules. This configuration could increase the total number of missile launch cells from 32 to approximately 48 per ship. Additionally, modifications to the integrated masts suggest the addition of new sensors or electronic warfare systems. These developments represent a concerted effort by Beijing to expand its naval combat capabilities and reduce the firepower gap with the United States.
