China achieves breakthrough in high-resolution global weather forecasting

The China Meteorological Administration and Sugon have announced a breakthrough in weather forecasting technology. Using the domestically developed MCV (Weather-Climate Integrated Model) and the Sugon 8000 AI supercomputing cluster, researchers successfully completed a 10-day global atmospheric forecast at a 5-kilometer resolution in less than one hour.

This achievement meets international operational efficiency standards and surpasses the resolution capabilities of major international systems, such as the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (IFS), which operates at approximately 9 kilometers. The MCV model utilizes a multi-moment constrained finite volume method, aiming for regional resolutions at the hundred-meter level and global resolutions at the kilometer level.

The Sugon 8000 supercomputer facilitated this by integrating high-precision scientific computing with artificial intelligence. The system employs an open computing architecture that supports both traditional numerical simulations and AI-driven data analysis. This capability is being applied to various scientific fields, including protein research, molecular dynamics, and turbulence simulation.
