Chinese Academy of Sciences completes Earth-Moon laser communication test

Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences have successfully completed a two-way high-speed laser communication link test between Earth and the Moon. Spanning a distance of over 400,000 kilometers, the experiment marks a significant transition from near-Earth orbit to deep-space optical communication.

The test achieved a downlink transmission speed of 100 Mbit/s and an uplink speed of 1.25 Mbit/s. This technology offers advantages over traditional microwave communication, including higher bandwidth, faster speeds, enhanced security, and more compact hardware.

To overcome the challenges of extreme distance, the team addressed issues such as beam alignment, signal attenuation, and atmospheric interference. They developed a specialized acquisition and tracking scheme to correct for orbital and optical propagation delays, and utilized high-sensitivity superconducting single-photon detection to filter signals from background noise. This breakthrough is expected to support future lunar research stations, crewed lunar missions, and deep-space exploration.
