China adapts drone technology and export controls
China is adjusting its military training and defense strategies by studying drone warfare experiences from the conflict in Ukraine. According to analysis from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Beijing is focusing on three primary areas of adaptation: integrating First-Person View (FPV) drones into combat training, enhancing detection and counter-drone capabilities, and developing interception systems utilizing lasers, microwaves, and electronic warfare.
Simultaneously, China has announced new export control measures for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), effective November 18. The updated regulations aim to facilitate civilian trade while tightening oversight on dual-use technologies. While procedures for certain commercial drones will be simplified, stricter controls will apply to high-performance engines, advanced controllers, and long-range UAVs with autonomous navigation capabilities. Additionally, the controlled capacity threshold for drones equipped with spraying systems will increase from 20 to 80 liters.
