China adds 40 Japanese firms to export control list amid rising Taiwan tensions

China’s Commerce Ministry announced export controls on 40 Japanese entities, placing 20 companies—including subsidiaries of Mitsubishi Electric and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries—on a control list and another 20 on a watch list. The measures target dual‑use items that could be used for military purposes and are presented as a response to what Beijing describes as Japan’s "remilitarisation" and accelerated defense buildup.

Tokyo called the curbs "unacceptable and extremely regrettable," with Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara saying Japan will assess the impact and consider counter‑measures. The move reflects heightened friction between Beijing and Tokyo over Japan’s increasing offensive capabilities and the broader dispute over Taiwan, which China views as its territory.

Analysts note the action also tests the United States’ commitment to its security treaty with Japan, as Washington balances its own strategic interests in the region while confronting China’s pressure campaign.
