China advances BEST nuclear fusion reactor in Hefei

China is advancing its nuclear fusion research with the development of the Burning Plasma Experimental Superconducting Tokamak (BEST) in Hefei. The project has reached a significant milestone, having completed more than half of the main reactor assembly.

Designed as a successor to the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), the BEST facility aims to transition from laboratory-scale experiments to large-scale engineering applications. The reactor will utilize a mixture of deuterium and tritium to demonstrate the feasibility of net energy yield.

Construction is expected to conclude by the end of 2027. Following completion, the project aims to demonstrate electricity generation through fusion by approximately 2030, serving as a foundation for future commercial reactors.
