China advances quantum computing and AI weather forecasting
Chinese researchers and tech companies are reporting significant advancements in quantum technology and artificial intelligence, transitioning these tools from laboratory settings to practical applications.
In the field of quantum computing, researchers from Fudan University and the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) have utilized the superconducting quantum computer ‘Origin Wukong’ to enhance drug discovery. Using a quantum-enhanced graph neural network, accuracy for HIV antiviral drug screening rose from 73 percent to 97 percent, while Alzheimer's drug prediction accuracy improved from 64 percent to 70 percent. Additionally, quantum machine learning has demonstrated superior performance over classical neural networks in predicting urban temperature and humidity.
Simultaneously, AI-driven weather forecasting is seeing rapid development. The Shanghai AI Lab’s ‘Fengwu’ model successfully predicted a typhoon’s landfall location and timing five days in advance, with a margin of error of approximately 30 kilometers and 30 minutes. Fengwu is part of a broader suite of Chinese AI weather models, including Huawei’s ‘Pangu’ and Fudan University’s ‘Fuxi’, which aim to complement traditional physics-based meteorological systems by learning patterns from vast historical datasets.
