China advances space capabilities to challenge US supremacy
China is rapidly advancing its space capabilities, posing a significant challenge to the United States in the pursuit of space supremacy. While much of the geopolitical focus remains on artificial intelligence, Beijing is making strides in various aerospace sectors, including the development of reusable rockets, such as those from the startup LandSpace.
China’s strategic ambitions include the establishment of lunar bases powered by nuclear reactors and the development of space-based weaponry. These advancements, alongside the creation of integrated satellite networks, aim to match U.S. capacities. The increasing congestion in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and a lack of international regulations present systemic challenges to the relationship between the two powers, raising concerns ranging from lunar territory competition to the potential for conflict in space.
