China advances vocational education toward international standard leadership

China is transitioning its vocational education international cooperation into a third stage focused on “standard leadership.” Following the 48th WorldSkills Competition, where the Chinese delegation secured 41 gold medals, the Ministry of Education announced plans for the 2026 World Vocational Education Development Conference. A key highlight will be the release of the “Beijing Agreement,” a global framework for vocational education standards.

To strengthen domestic capabilities, China has established a “national team” of 220 high-level vocational colleges. These institutions serve critical industrial clusters, including rail transit, urban renewal, and industrial machinery. The government is also prioritizing vocational training in eight service sectors, such as logistics, software and data services, and elderly care, to address labor shortages.

On a local level, Guangzhou Industry and Trade Technician College recently honored five students who won gold medals and an excellence award at the 48th WorldSkills Competition. The winners achieved breakthroughs in fields such as CAD mechanical design, mobile application development, and network system management.
