Cuba strengthens ties with Russia and China amid UN summit

During the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla and Russian Foreign Minister Serguéi Lavrov met to discuss strengthening their strategic bilateral ties. Lavrov expressed unwavering support for Cuba's demand to end the United States' economic, commercial, financial, and energy blockade. He also called for Cuba's removal from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism and condemned unilateral restrictive measures.

The meeting occurred amid heightened tensions, following remarks by former President Donald Trump characterizing Cuba as a “completely failed state,” which prompted the Cuban delegation to withdraw from the assembly session. Cuban officials noted that direct communications with the U.S. government remain without progress due to ongoing coercive measures.

Separately, Cuba and China marked the 66th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. Officials from both nations emphasized their historical friendship and cooperation in strategic sectors such as agriculture, energy, and biotechnology. China reiterated its support for Cuba's sovereignty and social development, highlighting the long-standing ties between the two countries.
