China and India react to new U.S. sanctions on Russian energy
The U.S. House of Representatives has passed legislation aimed at curbing Russia's ability to fund its war in Ukraine by targeting its energy and defense sectors. The bill, named after the late Senator Lindsey Graham, grants President Donald Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on major importers of Russian oil and gas.
China and India, both major purchasers of Russian crude, have expressed significant concern. China criticized the measures, while India warned that the sanctions could damage bilateral relations with Washington and disrupt the international energy market. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that securing energy supplies for its 1.4 billion citizens remains a paramount priority and stated the country would continue to pursue diversified energy sources.
The Kremlin responded by stating that additional American sanctions would complicate efforts to reach a peace agreement in Ukraine. The legislation also targets Russia's so-called “shadow fleet” of tankers used to bypass existing Western sanctions.
