China and India seek partnership over rivalry to drive development

Chinese diplomats have emphasized that China and India should view each other as partners rather than rivals, focusing on development and mutual cooperation. Speaking at a reception for the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Ambassador Xu Feihong stated that the two nations should see each other as development opportunities rather than threats and maintain a “correct strategic perception” to foster long-term ties.

This sentiment follows a meeting in New Delhi between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where leaders agreed that differences should not escalate into disputes. Recent progress in bilateral relations includes the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, the restoration of direct flights, the reopening of border trade, and improved visa arrangements to facilitate movement.

Economic ties between the two nations continue to grow, with bilateral trade reaching USD 91.7 billion in the first half of this year, marking a 23.6 percent year-on-year increase. Officials noted that as leading members of the Global South, both countries have a shared interest in strengthening friendly exchanges and addressing mutual concerns to ensure steady growth.
