China and Mexico affirm bilateral ties amid third-party pressure

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco in Beijing to discuss bilateral relations and cooperation within the Global South. Wang emphasized that China-Mexico relations are not directed at any third party and should not be influenced or interfered with by external forces. This statement comes amid reported pressure from the United States regarding Mexican restrictions on Chinese steel and aluminum products entering the North American market.

During the meeting, Wang expressed support for Mexico’s sovereignty and autonomy, noting that both nations share similar interests in national revitalization and global governance reform. He also highlighted the upcoming APEC summit in China, expressing a desire to use the event to promote the Asia-Pacific community and restart the Asia-Pacific Free Trade Area process.

Minister Velasco reaffirmed Mexico’s commitment to the One China principle and expressed a willingness to deepen institutional cooperation and high-level exchanges. He noted that Mexico and China share principles of sovereignty and equality, and he signaled support for the successful hosting of the APEC leaders' meeting in China.
