OAS to convene foreign ministers to address Nicaragua political crisis

The Organization of American States (OAS) has scheduled a meeting of foreign ministers for October 2 in Washington to address the political situation in Nicaragua. A draft resolution, presented by Colombia, Peru, and the United States, characterizes the policies of the Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo administration as a threat to the peace and security of the hemisphere.

The proposed resolution includes several demands: the immediate and verifiable release of political prisoners, the restoration of citizenship to 452 individuals, and the return of confiscated assets. It also calls for the withdrawal of security personnel, technology, and facilities from foreign nations—specifically mentioning Russia, China, and Iran—that may threaten regional security.

Additionally, the draft proposes the creation of a Ministerial Follow-up Group to facilitate direct dialogue with the Nicaraguan government. This comes in response to recent constitutional reforms in Nicaragua aimed at blocking opposition participation in elections and extending presidential terms. While some nations, such as Brazil, have suggested softening the language regarding the 'threat' to the hemisphere, the meeting remains a critical step in addressing the country's ongoing political turmoil.
