China and Nicaragua share a historical narrative of resistance against 19th-century Western expansionism and foreign intervention. Both nations faced territorial occupation and conflict driven by the interests of European powers and the United States.

In China, the period from the end of the First Opium War in 1842 to the 1949 Communist Revolution is referred to as the ‘Century of Humiliation,’ during which Western powers sought control over strategic maritime ports. Similarly, in Nicaragua, powers such as England, Germany, and the United States competed for control over the territory to manage transit between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
