China and Poland increase central bank gold reserves
Central banks are showing divergent trends in gold accumulation. According to data from the World Gold Council, global central banks were net buyers of 39 tonnes of gold in August 2026.
China continued its long-term acquisition strategy, increasing its reserves by approximately 20 tonnes in August, marking a 23-month streak of purchases. Poland's National Bank also expanded its holdings, purchasing 8 tonnes in August to bring its year-to-date total to roughly 98 tonnes as it moves toward a 700-tonne target.
In contrast, Russia reported net sales of 6 tonnes in August, bringing its total net sales for the year to 56 tonnes. These opposing movements reflect differing monetary and institutional decisions regarding gold reserves.
