China and Poland lead historic central bank gold accumulation

Central banks continue a significant trend of gold accumulation to bolster strategic independence and diversify reserves against geopolitical and economic instability. Between 2021 and 2026, China and Poland emerged as the dominant buyers, each increasing their holdings by over 400 tonnes.

In September 2026, net monthly purchases by central banks reached 63 tonnes. China reported its largest monthly increase in three years during September, adding approximately 23 tonnes to its reserves. Poland has also intensified its activity, with its National Bank purchasing roughly 98 tonnes since the beginning of 2026, moving closer to a 700-tonne target.

Other notable accumulators include India, which added 204 tonnes during the 2021–2026 period, followed by Turkey, Uzbekistan, and Brazil. Conversely, some nations have moved in the opposite direction; Russia reported net gold sales of six tonnes in August 2026, contributing to a total of 56 tonnes sold since the start of the year.
