China and Russia deepen energy and economic cooperation

China and Russia are deepening economic and energy cooperation, though key details regarding the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline remain under negotiation. While Gazprom and China National Petroleum Corporation signed a memorandum in September 2025 to establish the project's framework, a final commercial contract has not been reached. Disagreements persist regarding gas pricing, financing, and implementation schedules.

The proposed 2,600-kilometer pipeline would transport gas from Russia's Yamal Peninsula through Mongolia to northern China, with a target capacity of 50 billion cubic meters annually over 30 years. This project is a priority for Moscow as it seeks new markets following decreased sales to Europe, while Beijing views it as a way to secure long-term land-based energy supplies.

In addition to energy, officials have discussed the economic integration of Northeast China and the Russian Far East. During recent meetings in Vladivostok, leadership emphasized strengthening strategic coordination and investment, noting that bilateral relations have reached an ‘unprecedented level’ as both nations work to align their industrial and resource-based interests.
