Iran war drives up global energy costs and U.S. household expenses
The ongoing conflict involving Iran is exerting significant economic pressure on both the United States and Europe. Moody’s Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi estimates that the war has cost the average U.S. household nearly $2,000, totaling approximately $265 billion nationwide. This burden includes $1,100 in increased energy and transportation costs, $540 due to higher interest rates, and $360 in military spending.
In the United States, fuel prices have surged, with regular gasoline averaging $4.33 per gallon—a 45% increase from pre-war levels. Diesel prices have seen even sharper rises, reaching record highs in September. These rising costs are becoming a critical political issue ahead of the U.S. midterm elections.
In Europe, the conflict has increased the cost of imported fossil fuels by more than 100 billion euros. This economic strain is compounded by high state debt and rising borrowing costs for governments.
On the military front, the Pentagon is reportedly considering the use of the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB) against Iranian energy infrastructure and potential nuclear sites, such as the Pickaxe Mountain bunker. Meanwhile, oil markets remain volatile; West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude recently surged over 6% following an unexpected 8.6 million barrel inventory draw reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
