Northern Sea Route: China and South Korea expand Arctic maritime presence
China and South Korea are expanding their presence in the Northern Sea Route, a maritime corridor along the Russian Arctic coast that offers a faster alternative to the Suez Canal. China is utilizing the route to transport goods to Europe and secure Russian energy resources, such as liquefied natural gas. The Chinese shipping company Sea Legend is launching a regular container service between Ningbo and Felixstowe, which could nearly halve traditional transit times.
South Korea's PanStar is also preparing a test voyage from Busan to Europe via the Arctic. This growing cooperation between Beijing and Moscow has raised security concerns within NATO.
Simultaneously, the route is facilitating the movement of sanctioned Russian energy. The Arctic LNG-2 project and the vessel Christophe de Margerie are both subject to US and EU sanctions, yet satellite imagery and shipping data indicate continued activity, with China dominating international transit along the route since the invasion of Ukraine.
