China and Russia vow to oppose Japan’s nuclear ambitions

China and Russia have expressed a unified stance against Japan’s potential pursuit of nuclear weapons and its ongoing military developments. Chinese Ambassador to Russia, Zhang Hanhui, stated that Beijing and Moscow have reached a “high degree of consensus” and intend to remain “highly vigilant” regarding what they describe as Japan’s accelerated remilitarization.

Writing for the Russian state news agency TASS, Zhang emphasized that both nations are committed to preserving the international order established following World War II. He argued that any movement toward nuclear capabilities by Tokyo would be met with firm opposition from both capitals. The diplomatic tension centers on Japan’s security policy debates, specifically regarding its stockpile of civilian plutonium and the potential for hosting U.S. nuclear weapons on its territory.

While Japan maintains its non-nuclear principles, China and Russia frame the current policy discussions as a threat to regional stability and a departure from historical post-war frameworks. The two nations indicated they are prepared to coordinate their positions and seek international support from countries that share their views on historical and legal issues related to the Second World War.
