China announces 2026-2030 ecological resilience plan

China has released a new development plan aimed at enhancing ecological conservation and resilience between 2026 and 2030. The plan, issued jointly by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and the Ministry of Natural Resources, focuses on green modernization, increasing ecosystem diversity, and ensuring national ecological security.

Key targets established in the document include maintaining protected areas at a minimum of 18% of the country's total land area and raising the Ecological Quality Index (EQI) to 86.5. Additionally, the government aims to increase the soil and water conservation rate to over 74% and achieve a forest coverage rate of 25.8%.

The initiative also includes measures to optimize ecological spaces, promote ecosystem restoration, and strengthen global biodiversity conservation. Supporting these efforts, a new ecological and environmental code is set to take effect this Saturday, providing a stronger legal framework for sustainable development.
