China automotive targets may lower electric vehicle costs in Brazil
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has announced ambitious automotive targets as part of its 15th Five-Year Plan for 2026–2030. The plan mandates that electrified vehicles account for 70% of passenger car sales and 40% of commercial model sales within China.
These regulations are expected to impact the Brazilian market, which is heavily dominated by Chinese manufacturers such as BYD and Geely. A key requirement is for the average energy consumption of passenger electric vehicles to reach 8.7 kilometers per kilowatt-hour (km/kWh). While current popular models like the BYD Dolphin Mini GS and Geely EX2 already meet this threshold, compact models may need to reach approximately 11.1 km/kWh to ensure the entire fleet average meets the new standard.
To achieve these efficiency goals, the industry is expected to focus on two strategic paths: increasing vehicle range without expanding battery size, or reducing battery cell size to maintain current range while lowering production costs. Such innovations could potentially bring the price of entry-level electric vehicles in Brazil below the R$ 100,000 mark.
