China backs Russia in Kuril Islands dispute with Japan

China has expressed support for Russia’s recent criticisms of Japan regarding the ongoing dispute over the Kuril Islands. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that Beijing agrees with remarks made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov concerning Japan’s status and its obligations under the post-World War II international order.

Lin Jian specifically referenced the “Enemy States” clauses within the United Nations Charter, arguing that upholding these provisions is essential to preserving the results of the war and preventing a resurgence of militarism. The Chinese spokesperson accused Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi of attempting to “accelerate the remilitarization” of the archipelago and failing to reflect on Japan’s historical military past.

The diplomatic friction follows a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Iturup, the largest of the four Kuril Islands claimed by Japan. While Tokyo has filed formal protests and labeled the visit “absolutely unacceptable,” Russia maintains that its sovereignty over the islands is “inviolable.”
