China bans Philippine Defense Minister Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and family

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced personal sanctions on Philippine Defense Minister Gilberto Teodoro Jr., his wife and child, prohibiting them from entering mainland China, Hong Kong or Macau. Chinese organizations and individuals are also barred from conducting any transactions or cooperation with the family.

The sanctions follow Teodoro’s sharp criticism of Beijing at the Shangri‑La Dialogue in Singapore, where he accused China of aggressive claims in the South China Sea and questioned its role as a potential US proxy. Beijing described his remarks as repeatedly irresponsible and damaging to bilateral ties. Teodoro downplayed the measures, saying he holds no assets in China and has no intention of visiting.

The move underscores rising tensions between Beijing and Manila over overlapping territorial claims in the South China Sea, where both nations have increased naval patrols and confrontations.
