China bans Philippines Defense Minister Gilberto Teodoro and family from entry

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on 11 June that Philippine Defense Minister Gilberto Teodoro, his wife and children are prohibited from entering mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. Chinese individuals and organisations are also barred from any transactions or cooperation with Teodoro and his family. The sanction follows Teodoro’s statements branding China a “serious threat” to the Philippines’ territorial and political sovereignty in the South China Sea, which Beijing described as irresponsible, misleading and harmful to China’s legitimate interests. The Philippines has not responded publicly. The measure marks a rare instance of Beijing restricting a senior foreign official and adds to rising tensions over disputed maritime claims, where both sides have increased naval patrols and diplomatic protests.

Earlier, China had offered fertilizer and fuel aid to the Philippines to alleviate shortages caused by the Middle‑East crisis, underscoring the complex mix of cooperation and confrontation in bilateral relations.
