China book fairs highlight digital trends and APEC diplomacy

Major book fairs in China are highlighting the intersection of traditional publishing and digital content. The Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF) recently concluded, showcasing a strong interest in digital content sectors such as web literature, gaming, short videos, and AI solutions.

During the BIBF, Japanese publishers noted that while interest in Japanese books remains high, the publishing review process in China has become more cautious and prolonged due to current China-Japan relations. Demand is currently bifurcated, with high interest in comics, horror, mystery, children's books, and specialized technical fields like medicine and engineering.

Separately, the 2026 Southern China Book Fair is set to open in Guangzhou on August 27. The event will feature a debut APEC-themed cultural pavilion to serve as a precursor to the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Shenzhen. Thailand will participate as the Guest Country of Honour, presenting a national pavilion alongside the APEC exhibition.
