China box office: ‘Once Upon a Time in the Middle East’ holds top spot
The Chinese box office continues to be led by the homegrown war comedy-drama ‘Once Upon a Time in the Middle East’. Directed by Wen Muye and produced by Dirty Monkeys, the film has maintained its position as the top performer for six consecutive weekends. As of the September 18–20 period, the film has reached a cumulative gross of approximately $325.7 million since its nationwide release on August 11.
Christopher Nolan’s epic ‘The Odyssey’ has also seen significant commercial success in the territory, surpassing the $100 million mark with a cumulative total of $106.5 million.
Other notable performers in the market include the crime thriller ‘V’ by Pearl River Film Group, which has grossed $89.6 million, and the animated fantasy ‘All Wishes Come True!’, which has reached $286.3 million. Despite these individual successes, the overall mainland China weekend grosses saw a decline to $15 million during a pre-holiday lull, contributing to a year-to-date box office of $4.29 billion, a 29.2% decrease compared to the previous year.
