China builds potential first-of-its-kind uncrewed submarine mothership
Satellite imagery analysis indicates that China is constructing a specialized mothership designed to deploy and support Extra-Extra Large Uncrewed Underwater Vehicles (XXLUUV) at the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai.
According to reports from Naval News, the vessel features a design similar to an amphibious transport dock, including a large hangar and a stern well-deck equipped with a heavy-duty lifting mechanism. This configuration suggests the ship will serve as a mobile maintenance and launch base for autonomous submersibles. The vessel is estimated to be capable of carrying up to four XXLUUVs, or a larger number of smaller models.
China has already conducted tests in Hainan with two XXLUUV models measuring 35 and 45 meters in length. These vehicles are significantly larger than the United States' Boeing Orca XLUUV, being approximately six to eight times its size. The development of this mothership appears to be part of a broader, undisclosed effort by China to operationalize large-scale uncrewed underwater capabilities.
