China calls for end to U.S. sanctions against Cuba at UN
During a high-level debate at the United Nations General Assembly, Chinese Vice President Han Zheng called for the immediate end of the decades-long blockade and recent sanctions against Cuba. Han urged relevant nations to cease threats of force against the island and to lift all economic restrictions completely.
The call for relief comes amid a severe energy crisis in Cuba. This situation has been exacerbated by recent U.S. policies, including the imposition of tariffs on countries supplying crude oil to the island and the cessation of petroleum aid from Venezuela. These measures have led to prolonged power outages and have impacted essential sectors such as transportation, food production, healthcare, and education.
China's position was echoed by several other nations, including Vietnam, Brazil, and Mexico, which expressed solidarity with Cuba and condemned the economic embargo. The Chinese representative also emphasized the importance of upholding the international order established after World War II and protested unilateral actions that violate the UN Charter.
