China calls for EU dialogue to avoid trade dispute escalation
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called on the European Union to engage in “constructive dialogue” to prevent an escalation of trade disputes. In a telephone conversation with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, Wang emphasized that protectionism would not enhance European competitiveness, but would instead deprive consumers of quality goods at affordable prices, trigger inflation, and hinder the ecological transition.
The call comes as the EU and major member states, including France, adopt tougher stances against China to protect European companies from what they characterize as unfair competition in sectors such as acquisitions, public procurement, and electric vehicles. China has criticized these measures as “disguised protectionism” and an attempt to “politicize trade.”
Meanwhile, Germany is pushing for a coordinated EU approach, including the potential for broader tariffs, as concerns grow regarding trade imbalances. Berlin is currently attempting to balance industrial pressure with its significant economic dependence on the Chinese market.
