China calls for removal of green technology trade barriers at COP31
China has proposed that the upcoming COP31 climate summit in Turkey address protectionism and trade barriers affecting green technologies. Li Gao, China's Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment, stated that negotiations should tackle obstacles that hinder the global energy transition, specifically citing unilateralism and protectionism as challenges to collective efforts.
This proposal comes amid ongoing trade disputes with the United States and the European Union regarding Chinese exports such as electric vehicles and solar panels. While China did not name specific countries or propose concrete measures to eliminate tariffs, it advocated for a more open international trade system to facilitate the circulation of low-emission products.
Additionally, China is calling for increased climate financing for developing nations, aiming to mobilize at least $300 billion annually by 2035. The summit, hosted by Turkey, is also expected to focus on the '35x35' goal, which seeks to increase the share of electricity in global energy consumption from 20% to 35% by 2035.
