China calls on UN to curb emerging tech misuse and protect South Sudan stability

China’s interim UN ambassador Sun Lei addressed the Security Council on 5 August, urging stronger management of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, drones and the internet. He warned that terrorist groups are exploiting these tools for propaganda, recruitment, financing and attacks, and called for international cooperation to develop regulatory frameworks and to assist developing nations in building counter‑terrorism capacity.

The following day Sun Lei spoke again, emphasizing the need to safeguard stability in South Sudan ahead of the country’s end‑year elections. He appealed to all parties to remain calm, avoid violence, and support the UN mission’s efforts to promote inter‑ethnic dialogue and confidence‑building measures. China praised South Sudan’s 15th independence anniversary and pledged continued constructive support for peace, nation‑building and economic development.
