China claims potential military superiority over Philippines in South China Sea

Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan stated that China “may easily win” a confrontation with the Philippines, a key United States treaty ally, amid escalating tensions in the South China Sea. In response to these remarks, the Philippines summoned Ambassador Jing to protest the comments.

The diplomatic friction occurs as the United States manages military diversions to the Middle East and works to replenish missile stockpiles. Analysts suggest that while China may not capitalize on these distractions immediately, the depletion of U.S. munitions could provide Beijing with a long-term strategic advantage.

China has continued to expand its military presence in the region by constructing outposts and airstrips on disputed islands and establishing a joint airbase in Laos. The United States-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty remains a critical factor, as it covers armed attacks against Philippine forces anywhere in the Pacific, including the South China Sea.
