China commemorates 90th anniversary of the Long March
At a conference marking the 90th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese Red Army's Long March, President Xi Jinping called for the nation to create new glories on a “new long march.” He emphasized that the spirit of the Long March must be carried forward through high-quality development, steadfast ideological beliefs, and the strengthening of the People's Liberation Army.
Reflecting on the historical event, scholars note that the Long March (1934–1936) was a pivotal moment in Chinese revolutionary history. During this period, Mao Zedong composed several significant poems that captured the shifting emotional landscape of the journey—moving from the depression of being surrounded by enemies to the optimism following the Zunyi Conference.
These historical reflections serve to link the revolutionary struggles of the past with China's current goals of socialist modernization and national rejuvenation. The leadership stressed that the modern “long march” involves navigating complex international and domestic challenges to achieve the second centenary goal.
